What’s The History Behind Weight Watchers?

The 1960s gave us great music, movies, and art, it also gave us Weight Watchers.
In September of 1961, a woman named Jean Nidetch started a revolution. Each week, Jean, a housewife, and mother, would invite a group of friends over to her house in Queens, New York. In these weekly meetings, they would discuss and formulate different ways to lose weight in a healthy manner. Before she knew it, 40 people were joining these weekly meetings, and that’s when she realized that dieting was much more than just losing weight.

After a couple of years of planning and people growing curious, Jean launched Weight Watchers in the Spring of 1963. With 400 attendees, she held the first official Weight Watchers meeting in a rented loft above an old movie theatre in Queens.

When Was The First Weight Watchers Book Launched?

1966 the first Weight Watchers book was published and sold more than 1.5 million copies. The book features information on the Weight Watchers program, recipes, and different ways to plan a menu around the lifestyle. With the popularity of the book, more ideas began to circulate. In 1968, a range of different heat-and-serve meals, travel kits, and scales were on the market, making it simple for those who were interested in the lifestyle.

Is WW A Global Program?

The popularity of the program grew, and by 1969, it had reached the shores of Australia. The first meeting was in Syndey and would eventually grow to 400 locations throughout the continent. By 1972, New Zealand caught on to the diet and launched the first Weight Watchers meeting in Auckland. Within 15 years of Jean starting the first meeting in her home, she had built an international empire that stretched across the world.

Over the next 30 years, Weight Watchers continued to grow and help those who were wanting to change their lifestyle. The first point system was created, which is now known as the SmartPoint system.
Last year, Weight Watchers, which is now known as WW, was voted #1 best diet for weight loss, nine years in a row! WW continues to lead the world in wellness and weight loss goals.

How Does WW Continue To Grown In Popularity And Evolve?

The Weight Watchers program, now rebranded as WW (Wellness that Works), has gained widespread popularity around the world due to its unique, holistic approach to weight loss and overall well-being. One key feature that sets WW apart from other weight loss options is its point-based system called SmartPoints, which assigns values to different foods based on their nutritional content, making it easier for participants to track their intake and make healthier choices.

The program also encourages physical activity through its FitPoints system, promoting a balanced lifestyle. Social support and community-building play a significant role in the success of WW, with members attending weekly meetings or engaging in online forums to share experiences, tips, and encouragement.

Technology has further enhanced the program’s accessibility and convenience, with the WW app offering easy tracking of food and exercise, personalized coaching, and a wealth of resources, including recipes and workout ideas. Numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of WW, with participants experiencing significant weight loss and improved health outcomes compared to other weight loss options.
By focusing on sustainable lifestyle changes, incorporating social support, and leveraging technology, WW has established itself as a leading weight loss program that resonates with individuals across the globe.

What Are WW SmartPoints?

We want to give you a quick breakdown of the WW SmartPoints and what they entail.

SmartPoints are number values placed on foods to help make what to eat a simpler process for you. According to the Weight Watcher’s website,

“Every food and drink has a SmartPoints value. Calories give it the baseline; saturated fat and sugar drive the SmartPoints value up, while protein drives it down.”

This is because numerous studies have confirmed the benefits of eating less sugar and saturated fat and more protein—not just for weight loss but all sorts of other health reasons.

How Many SmartPoints Do You Get on WW?

Well, it differs from person to person. It’s based on many factors, your height, weight, sex, and age. You can find your personal allotted points on the WW app called myWW+.

SmartPoints can be found on the packaging of different WW food products and on the myWW+ app. However, higher SmartPoints do not mean that particular food is considered bad. It means you have to work it into the total amount of points allotted for that day! For more information on the WW SmartPoint system, visit the WW website, which outlines everything you need to know.
